What Makes Great Teaching?

As I started this course, I was nervous because I was unsure about so many things involving the school system. I was also nervous about having to do blog posts because writing is not my strong suit but after completing this course, I've grown to enjoy blogging as it gives me a way to express my opinions as well as reading other people's opinions about each topic discussed. This class has definitely broadened my knowledge of all the struggles that surround the education system and because of that, I was able to brain storm about ways that would improve or resolve these issues. One thing that helped me understand the topics better was having to do tasks that promoted serious thought within each strategy used during these tasks. Some of my favorite strategies that we used throughout this course would have to be the blog posts mentioned before because it was a great way to express ideas and opinions, the golden lines because it allowed us to put the spot light on a phrase that stuck out to us, the black out poem because it allowed us to take an article and change it into something powerful and meaningful, the anticipation guide because it showed us how our opinions can change after gathering more information, and lastly i enjoyed the Do's and Don'ts because it allowed us to understand what is right and wrong when dealing with situations such as trans youth. Now talking about what makes great teaching, I would say that great teaching comes from being understanding, welcoming of all, and providing the full picture of topics.

  1. Hi Sophie! Awesome job on the last of blog posting for this semester! Thank you for sharing your experience with this class. I was also nervous about having to blog each and every other week! I felt like I was not going to have a lot to say! I have never blogged before so everything was very new to me. As time went on I was excited for blogging and I had so much to say after each module. I am glad you had the same positive experience as I certainly did! I am happy that you like the black out poem assignment. I really liked that one too! I would definitely take this strategy into my future classroom for my students to express themselves in. It was a fun and creative project that really got you engaged in the learning. Do you have any ideas of how you would use the strategies you mentioned in your future classroom?

  2. Hi Sophie! I loved how you talked about blogging in itself and how your feelings have changed about the assignment as a whole throughout the semester. I think being able to write how you feel about a topic is so important, and it opens up a world of ideas and opinions that we might not have thought about before. I was definiltly scared to do this blog because like you said, writing is not my strong suit. While I can write research and argumentative papers, something that is considered more informal and creative writing like this was a terrifying thought to me. The to do list is definitely something that I do in my everyday life, yet I did not think too much about it, so I'm glad that you liked it too. I feel like it really provides a structure that can help ground us as a teacher when we inevitably get overwhelmed. My question to you would be, what strategies do you think you would teach in your classroom? Have an amazing summer!

    1. Hi Rylee! Thank you for commenting on my blog! I really appreciate knowing that I am not the only person who struggles with writing. I think you make a great point about blogs being a way to write how you feel about a topic. To answer your question, I believe that I will definitely form some type of blogging strategy within my future classrooms because it really helped me feel confident in what i was writing about and it allowed me to express my opinions without having to worry about others judging me. I think I would also have my students do black out poems because it is a great way to spark creativity in students along with allowing them to produce meaningful messages with the use of different texts. I hope you have an amazing summer too!

  3. Hey Sophie, thank you for blogging this week I found your blog really interesting. It's great to hear that this course has broadened your knowledge and helped you think critically about ways to improve the education system. You mentioned that great teaching comes from being understanding and welcoming of all. How can teachers ensure that they create a safe and welcoming environment for all students, especially those who may feel marginalized or underrepresented in the classroom? Also, you mentioned that the strategies used in this course helped you better understand the topics. Which strategy do you think was the most effective in helping you learn and why? Are there any strategies that you would like to see incorporated more into future courses or lessons?

    1. Hi Alex! Thank you for commenting on my blog! To answer your first question, I think teachers can make sure they are creating a safe and welcoming space for their students by always being respectful towards every student, treating every student equally, and by including characteristics of the marginalized or underrepresented student into their texts, problems, and scenarios. By doing this, it can get other students more exposure to different types of people which will decrease the amount of segregation and it will allow the marginalized students to be seen and understood in a place where they do not feel 100% comfortable. To answer your last two questions, I think that these blog posts helped me learn the most because it allowed me to express and share my thoughts while also getting to read about other students thoughts about the same topic. I can definitely see myself incorporating some type of blogging system in my future classrooms so that the students can expand their thinking about certain important topics.

  4. Hi Sophie! I enjoyed reading your blog post and all that you had to say! I was also very nervous starting this course because I had no idea what to expect. It made me nervous knowing others would read and comment on our posts, but I immediately came to love blogging! We are able to share our thoughts and ask questions and read about things from different perspectives from our peers. I enjoyed all the strategies as they each were so different. I would say blogging is one that I really love and enjoy. I also like the 3-2-1 strategy and the 3-minute pause. Both of these required us to stop and take a moment to think about the information we had learned. I had never heard of or used most of these strategies, but I will definitely be using some in my classroom in the future! What strategies would you want to teach to your students?

  5. Good afternoon Sophie! First I would like to start off by saying great work on your final blog and I enjoyed reading it. I would also like to say I agree with you about being nervous about the unknown of teaching. Sometimes I struggle with the same thing and hope that I am going to be the best teacher I can be. There are definitely going to be many unexpected things happening in this profession but I believe it is worth it when it comes to being a life changer to your students. I am also glad to hear that this class and blogging has helped you become more confident in your writing and I can honestly say the same! Blogging has been an assignment that I look forward to because not only do I love the challenge of answering the compelling question but I also enjoy sharing and reading my classmate's thoughts on the topic.

  6. Hey Sophie! I really enjoyed reading your thoughts over this weeks topic and think that you made really great points over things that make teaching great! I have also grown to enjoy blogging and I think it can be a great outlet for us to express ourselves and have discussions with our peers. I think that it can be extremely beneficial to our students to show and allow them to have deeper thoughts and create their own options, even if it doesn't align with our own. Many of the strategies we learned throughout this course can help to make our classrooms more engaging by having different ways to present content and asses their understanding. My favorite strategies were the blackout pom and the one pager. I believe that both of these can allow students to use their creativity and further understand the content they are learning. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  7. Hello Sophie, I have also grown to love blogging from this course. I think it makes the course more interesting. And allows us to express our own thoughts for our peers to see and read. I didn’t expect this course to teach me so much on education and certain topics. It allowed me to learn. It allowed me to express my emotions. I love this course! One of your favorite assignments was the black out poem. I loved that assignment as well. I think it allows students to pull the words or phrases they felt were important and powerful to them. How do you plan to use these assignments? As a future teacher it’s our responsibility to be the change within our society. When you ended your blog with “providing the full picture of topics'' I felt it was empowering. How do you plan to provide the full picture? Great job on your last blog! Thank you for sharing with us!

    1. Hi Sophie! When I started this course, I had done a blog before but it was only one way. I've never had to respond to other people or have other people respond to me. It was a completely new experience to have to interact with others weekly. I did not think that I would enjoy it at all and I was surprised that I liked it even a little bit. I think I liked it because we have to interact with the same group of people so we get to know each other in a sense even though it is a completely asynchronous class. I loved the Black Out Poem assignment too! It's a great assignment for letting our students focus on the words and phrases that stuck out to them, that had the most meaning to them. They get to focus on what they feel is the most important to the topic. It think it is a great assignment for our future students to do because this lets us see the differences in what our students found meaning in and found important which gives the opportunity for great conversations.

  8. Hi Sophie! I too was also unsure about a lot of things in the school system. However, I have learned so much and have opened my mind to a lot of things. I thought that blogging was going to be super difficult and not too fun but i love being able to share my thoughts but also read others' as well. This aspect of the class had to be my favorite. Reading everyone's different perspectives allowed me to be more understanding. Many of the strategies that were used were super beneficial and i think my favorite would have to be the worditout. I think it was such a fun way to display significant phrases. I enjoyed reading your blog and loved what you had to share with us! What was your favorite strategy?
